Alvin McCall filled Wilshire Ebel Theatre with a rare degree of musical excitement . . . freshness and imagination . . . In pianist Jan Deats, McCall has a kindred spirit. She accompanied McCall at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition, where he was a finalist, and on several occasions since, and musical agreement between them is fluent and sure . . . A clamorous standing ovation was, for once, fully deserved. The ardent response brought McCall and Deats back for four encores.
